Tramping

View From Mt Arthur Tablelands Tramping is the term used in New Zealand for walking on tracks or trails. Tramping is often referred to in other countries as hiking or trekking. New Zealand has many large areas of bush and mountains with tracks going through them and an awesome hut system. There are some fantastic tracks in the North Island notably the Waikaremoana Circuit, Tongariro Crossing and Taranaki Circuit. The South Island is even better with awesome scenery and sections of wildneress all over the place. Some of the more famous tracks are the Heaphy, Milford, Rees Dart and Routeburn. There are hundreds of other tracks to choose from with everything from easy coastal walks to traversal of alpine passes. At the very bottom of New Zealand is Stewart Island which has more tramping tracks than roads. Stewart island has beautiful coastal walks and an abundance of native wildlife, it's one of the best places in the country to see a kiwi in the wild.
